2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Management Shift Follows Lukewarm Reception
The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a clearer vision.
The president expressed that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed approach, aiming to address player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions
The news echoes a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the complete message from Ismailer's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to continue.”
Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s the game playtest was enlightening. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It revealed the necessity for a more distinct vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the input to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s poised to deliver on its ambition to our players.
The belief in this project strengthens every day. To boost the remarkable advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome Ben Brinkman as the incoming Director of 31st Union. After several months of talks, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s leadership and experience in the competitive gaming genre is vast, having dedicated the recent years producing and overseeing some of the most popular franchises in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving Ben soon. We are all excited to persist observing the progress of the game in the weeks to follow.
The President
Experience of the Incoming Head
The appointee presently serves in the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Details and Vision
The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 together with a public demo. At the time, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the description reads. "Take on the competition with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that shift every session. Will you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or go big, risk it all, and hope your team can earn top ranking? The decision is in your hands."
Project Ethos does not have an official launch window or supported systems, but players can expect more updates as development continues.
