Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.
"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
