Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.

Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
